Inspire Group Director Alex Bunting reflects on the significance of the upcoming International Overdose Awareness Day.

Every year, on August 31st, communities across the island of Ireland, and around the globe unite in solemn remembrance and urgent action for International Overdose Awareness Day.

For Inspire, this day is more than a date in the calendar. It’s a call for compassion, education and advocacy.

Why this day matters

Overdose is a public health crisis, one which continues to devastate families and communities. In the UK alone, thousands of lives are lost each year to drug-related deaths, many of them avoidable. Behind every statistic is a person: a son, a daughter, a friend, a parent. On International Overdose Awareness Day, we can:

  • Remember those we’ve lost, without stigma or shame
  • Support those in recovery, as well as their families
  • Educate the public about overdose prevention and harm reduction
  • Advocate for compassionate policies and accessible mental health and addiction services

A day of reflection and action

Across the UK and Ireland, buildings will be lit up in purple. Memorial walks will be held. And community events will bring people together to share stories, offer support and raise awareness. Naloxone training, information stands and lived-experience testimonials are just some of the ways we can empower communities and save lives.

At Inspire, we believe that every life is worth saving and that every person deserves dignity, care and hope. Our services are built on the understanding that addiction is a health issue, not a moral failing. It is often rooted in trauma, isolation and unmet needs.

Breaking the silence

Stigma remains one of the greatest barriers to recovery. International Overdose Awareness Day challenges us to speak openly about drug use, mental health and the systemic issues that drive addiction. It’s a day to listen, learn and stand in solidarity with those who feel isolated and alone.

This year, we’re encouraging everyone to:

  • Wear purple and you their show support
  • Share stories of loved ones lost to overdose or working through recovery
  • Attend local events or host their own
  • Learn the signs of overdose and how to respond
  • Advocate for change in their communities

Together, we can end overdose

Overdose is preventable. Harm can be reduced and precious lives can be saved through education, empathy and evidence-based support. Inspire remains committed to providing holistic, person-centred care for everyone who needs it.

As ever, Inspire will strives for a future where no one is left behind.
