Healing Mental Health Through Writing

Scraboview Book Launch

A project which uses writing as a healing tool for mental health, is publishing “Roads and Roundabouts”, a book containing the creative work of people with mental health issues.
Roads and Roundabouts contains the poems, pictures, quotations and stories of members of the Scraboview Community Wellbeing Service in Newtownards.

Eilish Kelly, Creative Writing Tutor, who has worked with the group for a number of years and who spearheaded Roads and Roundabouts, is convinced of the benefits of writing and artistic activity as an ideal therapy for mental health problems, “When people find their emotions reflected back at them, they feel understood. It is the imagery of the poem, the meaningfulness of a story and the emotional impact of art giving them the sense that someone else feels like them and that they are not alone.”

Group Member and Service User Viviane McKeague said, “Taking part in this course has been one of the best experiences of my life. It gave me an opportunity to revisit painful aspects of my life that lay dormant for many years and shaped my opinion of myself in an extremely negative way… I now know who and what I am. I feel liberated.”

The launch will take place on 29th March in Newtownards Town Hall at 11am in the Londonderry Room and for more information about Scraboview click here
