Volunteers bring immeasurable value to all areas of Inspire’s work, supporting people with mental health conditions, learning/intellectual disabilities and autism. Below are some of our inspiring volunteers stories.
My name is Sheila and I am currently volunteering as a support volunteer in the Drogheda Home Support Service in County Louth.
As a volunteer, I have met many wonderful people. I enjoy the company of the service users in the house and I love listening to their life stories. The activities I do with the service users include playing games, going for walks, listening to music, watching DVDs and cooking. Personally, I have gained a lot from volunteering in this service and I hope I give some little thing back. Thanks to everyone involved for making it a great experience for me.
My Name is Alan and I volunteer in the Cuan Mhic Giolla Bhríde service in Faughart, County Louth, which is a residential facility with three service users. I am a support volunteer assisting services users with everyday activates, such as shopping, cooking and social pastimes. I have also been involved with creating daily meal plans for service users and Michelle, the manager in Faughart, has discovered my secret talent for decorating! I am currently using these skills to paint and decorate some of the rooms within the service, and I have recently reorganised and renovated the garden shed.
Volunteering has afforded me an opportunity to give back to the community. I very much look forward to the days when I volunteer in Faughart and I feel that my time and skills are valued and appreciated. It is also very encouraging to see how the small efforts we offer as volunteers make such a big difference to the lives of service users. My advice to anyone thinking of volunteering: Don’t worry about the time commitment, just offer what you can. It’s worth it.
