Welcome to our Annual Report.
2016/17 has been a seminal year in the development of our organisation. We changed our name, expanded our services into new areas, relocated and welcomed Addiction NI to the Inspire Group. While all this change was taking place, we worked hard to keep focused on delivering high quality services to people, families and communities we work with.
Like many successful social movements NIAMH (as we used to be known) was created by a parent who wanted to improve the life of their child. In our case this parent was the formidable Lady Margaret Wakehurst who recognized the lack of services available for her young son who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Lady Wakehurst established a community house for him and others in a similar situation. That first community house was called Beacon and the model was quickly replicated in towns and cities across Northern Ireland. Within a few years the Beacon Centres joined together to from NIAMH. Our organisation grew rapidly over the next decades.
In recognition of four decades worth of growth and development in 2016 NIAMH rebranded to Inspire. At the same time we moved to our new premises in Lombard House. The Resilience Centre we have created in Lombard House brings mental health, learning/intellectual disability and addiction services unashamedly into the heart of Belfast City Centre. The centre offers counselling services and a space for training and development, discussion, ideas and conversations around wellbeing for all. Despite the many exciting changes since that first Beacon Centre in 1959, Inspire remains an organisation driven by the needs we see in the community around us. Read on and follow the links to discover how Inspire has been helping people and families across Ireland in 2016/17.
Volunteers bring immeasurable value to all areas of Inspire’s work to support people living with a learning disability. Find out more about how you get involved with our work....
